[?] / + / Lourdes / D. Chron, 1924, July 7-3-3 / Case of an English girl whose hand was covered with sores from blood-poisoning. Went to Lourdes, May 29, in charge of a nurse, came back cured. On 6th of July she was examined by 50 doctors, at the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth, St. John's Wood, London. The diseased condition was certiied by 3 doctors of Lourdes. Sore gone but some contraction of the hand remained, and the 50 doctors' official statement was"On the evidence submitted, the cure is not proven." / The nurse was questioned. [SF-V: 408.1 to 408.4. (London Daily Chronicle, July 7, 1924, p. 3 c. 3.) "Lourdes Miracle To Be Tested." People, June 29, 1924, p. 6 c. 6. "Evidence will be laid before the meeting that a girl arrived with the pilgrimage and was examined before and after her cure by doctors at Lourdes. She had a septic hand and all efforts to cure it had been without success during the 17 months previous to the pilgrimage. When examined in the medical bureau the hand was seen to be rigidly flexed at the wrist and tightly clenched, the fingers resisting the efforts of the doetors. Buta matter of supreme importancein addition they observel eight or nine sores from which malodorous pus was oozing." "Half an hour after this examination the patient bathed in the piscine while the prayers for recovery were said by the crowd without. Three hours later she bathed a second time, and she noticed when removing her bandage that all trace of pus had disappeared from the hand, the sores were either healed or healing, the wrist spontaneously straightened and became flexible, and the fingers unclapsed. The movement was at first restricted. but steadily improved each hour." "The girl was the last patient to be accepted for the pilgrimage, and it is pathetic to note that she begged to be taken as a last chance before she lost her hand by amputation. I have had a letter from her, written with the 'bad' hand, which shows no trace of stiffness or clumsiness after its seventeen months of immobility." Thayer: "Found flying / may belong here."]

Wilhelm Herschel observed a galaxy (IC 3102) in April of 1784, and again observed it on December 28, 1785, with another galaxy (IC 3115); then, in April of 1830, his son, John Herschel observed these galaxies and identified them with his father's observations, but, apparently, recorded their positions with an error of a minute (west) in right ascension, (with IC 3115 given a position near IC 3102, identifying IC 3115 as IC 3102, and IC 3102 subsequently “missing” in the wrong location). These errors have caused confusion and persisted into uncorrected NGC lists as late as 2010. “H 4223” was converted into NGC 4241 and is now identified as the galaxy IC 3102.]

[Moon] / Mars / See Saturn. / Nature 68/index. [SF-III; 73. "The Satellites of Saturn." Nature, 68 (June 25, 1903): 184. "Mr. Hussey measured the position angles and distances of each satellite in respect to one of the others, and gives a table containing all the details of each observation; he concludes from estimations of their respective light values that Mimas is probably larger than Hyperion, and, from

his measurements, that the generally accepted diameter of Titan is undoubtedly too large; 2500 miles is, according to him, a much nearer approximation to the true value than the values given in most text-books." According to modern measures, Hyperion has about 15 percent of the mass of Mimas, and its average diameter, (being irregular in shape), is about only 270 km., (168 miles, given as "500?" miles by Young, in 1898), whereas Mimas is about 397 km. in diameter, (247 miles, given as "600?| miles by Young, in 1898. Titan is now given a diameter of about 5149 km., (3299 miles, given as "3500?" miles by Young, in 1898), thus, Hussey underestimated its diameter, which was closer to the older estimates.
